Guest Reviews of Ocean Soul (Big Island)
Wonderful Honeymoon Adventure
Ocean Soul was the perfect place for our Honeymoon in November 2016. We arrived late in the evening and were met by a wonderful couple that showed us around the property upon our arrival. As other reviewers have commented, the view is priceless. The master bedroom allows you to fall asleep to a beautiful, star studded sky and you wake up to a soft glowing sun rising towards the right of your view. Because of the time change, I found myself waking up well before sunrise but loved watching the sky change into day every morning. The waves crashing against the shore below offer a perfectly tranquil background noise. The home is wonderful in so many ways, the aspects that are not top notch seem trivial in comparison. During our stay, the light switch in the closet didn’t work and so one of us had to hold down the switch to keep the light on but we quickly discovered a temporary fix and did not even bother worrying anyone over the light (although in retrospect we should have mentioned it for future renters if for nothing else). There are also geckos everywhere. I studied herpetology in college and if anything, this was a fun little addition. For those less inclined to love these little guys, I could see how this could be a surprise. To me they were a nice reminder that we were in the middle of this amazing slice of nature. At night when the lights are on, you will find them enjoying your company, stuck all over the windows and during the day they disappear for the most part. It would also be nice to have working lights around the pool area. For our purposes, Ocean Soul was in a great location for us to explore the island. We spent a week in the property and traveled to Kona, Captain Cook (the snorkeling was awesome), both the green and black sand beaches, Akaka falls, the botanical garden, through Hilo many times, Volcanoes National Park and the night time lava boat ride, Hapuna Beach, Lapahoehoe… My favorite was the Kapoho Tide Pools… check it out if you can! Go 10 min N for amazing malasadas! We packed our own snorkels, masks and fins and it was so nice to keep them in our rental car and jump in whenever we found a place we wanted to explore. Also if you are wondering about what vehicle to rent- we rented a convertible and it was perfect. We initially booked a Jeep but were so glad when the rental car lady convinced us to go with the convertible. It was perfect. If you’re on the fence, go for it! This was the trip of a lifetime. Thanks, Elite properties!
Such an amazing house! We really enjoyed spending a week there. It’s a little far out of Hilo to restaurants, but the local market has most things needed. We got groceries in Hilo two times and ate at the house the whole week. Once we got pizza from the little market which was really great! Would go again for sure.
In a word, Ocean Soul is magical. I still cannot believe my good fortune in choosing the Big Island (I had never been to Hawaii before); the Hilo side (wonderfully lush); and Ocean Soul in particular. The house nestles into a cliff side such that you enter on the top floor and proceed downstairs to the first. The location protects the house, which meant that I survived a hurricane warning (Madeline) and watch (Lester) without the lights even flickering. It also gives you spectacular views, particularly from the master bedroom. Although just off Highway 19, you almost never hear road noise, again thanks to the way the house sort of cascades down the cliff side; the surf down below also provides a steady background. Hilo is a good half-hour away, but the drive ranges from beautiful to breathtaking, especially toward sunset when the clouds break and you catch a glimpse of the peak of Mauna Kea. From my base at Ocean Soul I explored as far north as the Pololū and Waipi’o Valleys, and as far south as South Point. Highlights in between included Akaka Falls and multiple trips to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. In terms of amenities, the house has everything you could possibly want. I could easily have done some serious cooking had I chosen to. My one complaint is that it’s difficult to tear yourself away and go exploring, but I had a lot of sights to see. In retrospect I should probably have spent at least one day doing nothing but lounging by the pool and sipping cocktails on the lanai… The management, including Jessica and Stacey, could not have been more responsive. Jessica was immediately in touch when the hurricane warning was issued for Madeline and we texted back and forth about what to stow away where. (I had nightmares of coconuts becoming shrapnel and deck chairs blowing away; as it turned out, the breeze picked up for a day, and I could probably have even left the chair pillows outside on the lanai.) To sum up, Ocean Soul is a spectacular base to explore a spectacular island!
Absolutely Stunning Property on Hamakua Coast
The house is jaw dropping beautiful. It has a stunning view nestled in the Hamakua coast and is convenient to both Hilo and Waimea but away from the hustle and bustle. The perfect location for some rest and relaxation. The house is well accommodated with pool, hot tub, 3 bedrooms, kitchens, and decks on multiple level. The Papaloa General Store three miles away is quaint and super convenient. The small town of Honakaa is close if you don’t want to make a run to Hilo. The property managers did a great job with communication about finding the property and providing an overview of the house and area. Take advantage of an in-house massage with Summer. Her business card was by the phone in the house and that was such a lovely experience. This property was everything we were looking for and more. We absolutely loved this property and would return.
Outstanding Architectural Dream House
This house is an architectural dream! The owners and original designers clearly put a great deal of thought and creativity into this home. It’s even better than the photos. Views are breathtaking, especially from the main living area, kitchen, dining, and upstairs master bedroom. You can literally hear the sound of the waves crashing below day & night from every room in the house (even bathrooms!). The layout of the house, locations of bedrooms & bathrooms, and lanais all allow for privacy if you’re traveling in a group or you can comfortably gather together in common living areas for group gatherings. All 3 bedrooms and bathrooms are very nice but the master bed & bath are exceptional! I spent hours up there reading, doing a little work on my computer and watching / listening to the ocean and surf. Mesmerizing and calming! The large open (very private) master bath shower and Jacuzzi tub are beautifully designed and so welcome after a day of hiking or walking. Kitchen is great – has everything you need, even an espresso machine, and lots of lovely Asian inspired dishware. The house is a bit out of the normal tourist path but we loved that aspect. Hilo is only a 30 minute drive and has everything you need for groceries, beer, wine, sundry items, etc. Interesting town to visit and Hilo Farmers Market on Wed & Sat is not to be missed! We spent 3 fantastic hours one morning at Hawaii Botanical Gardens (20 minutes south of the house). Highly recommend this one. Afterwards stop at the little What’s Shakin’ restaurant on your way back along the 4 mile scenic route, pick up amazing takeout food and then head back to the house to enjoy on the lanai overlooking the ocean. The property is well managed and Jessica (the manager) is accessible and knows the house very well. She will meet you at the house and give you a brief tour to get you oriented. This was very helpful. I’ve stayed in many VRBO homes all over the U.S. in the past several years but this house is my #1 favorite now. The next time I visit the Big Island this will be my “home base” for sure.
Our stay at Ocean Soul was a dream come true. The on-line descriptions and photos are wonderful, but paled in comparison to the breathtaking beauty and luxury offered! We’d hoped to view some contemporary Island Architectural Homes while we were there, this was the very special opportunity to actually LIVE in one of the best. With so many beautiful areas and spaces, it was fun getting lost in the vastness. Being at once isolated and accessible, we completely enjoyed every aspect of this one-of-a-kind property. The only sad part was having to leave.
We suspected that we were in for something special just from looking at the pictures. And we were not the least bit disappointed. Each room (and bathroom) in the house has a view to the Pacific with the master bedroom enjoying the grand 180 degree lookout. One morning we were treated with a rainbow in the gulch right next to the property. World class views and our own personal rainbow! Comfortable king size bed in the master with queen beds (one soft one firm) in each of the other bedrooms. Each bedroom was equipped with a portable AC unit, which we never needed. The ceiling fans were more than enough. Just an amazing property. Can’t wait to come back!
Absolutely Beautiful Property
This property is spectacular! The home is beautifully constructed from what appears to be native Hawaiian materials and is perched above the blue-green waters of the Pacific. The grounds are nicely maintained and the beach is an easy walk down a private path. The pool is gorgeous and inviting. The beds are comfortable and we loved sleeping with the windows open to hear the sounds of the waves crashing below. We will be back!
Great location, quiet, no neighbors - perfect to relax!
We spent a wonderful week here. Pool was quite chilly I must say but if you can stand that it works. The view is awesome, we saw several whales from the terrace every day. It is located on the “green” side of big island which we liked much more than Kona side. Also distances to all attractions are acceptable. Overall a very good choice, we’d come back in any case!
Ocean Soul is a unique property in an ideal location for exploring the Big Island. You are much closer to the Volcanoes National Park, the Waipio Valley, Akaka Falls, and the Black and Green Sand beaches than you would be in Kona or Waikoloa. Snorkeling and golf courses are also relatively close in Waimea and Kawaihae and Hawi (which is a beautiful drive) in about an hour. The house itself is architecturally beautiful although there are a few unusual furniture and appliance issues. The kitchen definitely could use a stove and refrigerator/freezer upgrade. The stove is gas but controlling the heat is tricky because your choices are basically high and medium, it’s difficult to simmer anything. The dining room table and chairs are not particularly utilitarian because the table is way too high for the average person. If you’re staying a week most of things don’t matter much but it you use the kitchen frequently it does take some getting used to. As for the rest of the home the beds and rooms are quite comfortable, all have ocean views. It is the views from this property that you simply will not be able to beat anywhere on the island. It blows away anything the Four Seasons could give you for about 1/5th the price and hearing the waves crash against your own beach every day never sucks. The master bedroom simply cannot be beat by any resort on the Big Island, I stand by that proclamation. The view alone is a reason to stay at Ocean Soul. The only reason I do not give this property a full 5 stars is it’s extremely difficult to find, especially in the dark. There is no visible address off of 19, the GPS can’t find it, Fed Ex couldn’t find it, and even after 3 weeks we all had issues finding it. Follow the directions very carefully would be my advice and when you show up do it during the daytime. It would behoove the management to have some marker in addition to the mirror closer to the driveway entrance off of 19. When you have to drive to Hilo because the Fed Ex driver cannot find your address it’s a bit of a problem. All this said I would highly recommended this house. It’s in by far the prettiest area on the Big Island, the location for exploring is excellent, and having that view is spectacular. If you want to sit on a beach and be closer to restaurants this place isn’t for you. However, if you truly want to see as much as possible on the big island and have a unparalleled experience looking at the ocean and stars this is it.
